Palais de Nice

In 1871, a family of shoemakers from Nice—the Bouchon family—purchased from Mr. Tori (for 60,000 francs) a two-storey building with a ground floor on Boulevard Carabacel. They later raised the structure, which became the Grand Hôtel de Nice. It was initially operated by the Krafft family, of Swiss-German origin, who bought the building in 1874 for 400,000 francs.

This prestigious establishment was expanded and modernised over the years as its success grew. It welcomed notable guests such as Duchess Vera of Württemberg and the Governor of Russian Poland. It was also here that Alfred Solvay, brother of Ernest Solvay—the famous Belgian chemists and industrialists—died in 1894. The tragic suicide of a 23-year-old Russian officer in 1906 also made headlines.

During the First World War, the Grand Hôtel was converted into a military hospital (No. 19), as was the case for many hotels in Nice at the time. It reopened after the war but ceased to operate as a hotel in 1937.

It was then transformed into private apartment buildings under the name “Palais de Nice.”

The building received the French Heritage Award (Vieilles Maisons Françaises) in 2006.

Today, it stands as one of the most sought-after Belle Époque Palaces in Nice.
