El Paradisio

It was in 1900 that Baroness Hélène de Zuylen de Nyevelt de Haar, née Rothschild, had the Villa Paradisio built on a nearly two-hectare park on the lower slopes of the Cimiez hill.

Once the muse and lover of the writer Renée Vivien, known as “Sappho 1900,” the Baroness lived only briefly in the villa and eventually donated it to the City of Nice.

Shortly before the Second World War, after Mussolini confiscated the Villa Medici, Villa Paradisio became the seat of the Prix de Rome. After the war, it housed the Regional Conservatory of Music until 2006.

Today, it is home to the Central Directorate of Education of the City of Nice. As per the Baroness’s wishes, the park remains open to the public, offering magnificent century-old trees, flower beds and play areas for children.

In 1966, part of the park was separated to build the El Paradisio Residences, comprising two buildings located along Avenue Brown-Séquard.
