Winter Palace

The Winter Palace belongs to the purest tradition of the Belle Époque palace hotels that flourished on the Cimiez hill between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Built in 1900, the Winter Palace of Cimiez is an iconic building in Nice. Originally designed as a grand hotel to attract wealthy foreign visitors, it stands in the middle of Boulevard de Cimiez, which at the time was served by an electric tramway. The Winter Palace was among the first buildings of its era to feature a major architectural innovation: the rooftop terrace — in addition to its elaborate decorative elements, ornate façades, and landscaped gardens typical of the Belle Époque.

Its monumental entrance, opening onto a winter garden adorned with large red-marble fireplaces, saw many crowned heads pass beneath its arches — regular guests of the Cimiez palaces during their elegant winter stays on the Riviera.

Formerly, the hotel’s ground floor contained its reception and leisure rooms. The grand dining room was located in the west wing — above today’s pharmacy — and opened onto a south-facing terrace. With four floors and numerous bedrooms, the hotel was furnished with great refinement: red-marble fireplaces contrasted with pale tapestries, and all the furniture was in the Louis XVI style.

The current co-owners of this palace — converted into private apartments in 1941 by Victor-Joseph Saglia and the architect Louis Milon de Peillon — enjoy access to a vast, beautifully situated park at the very heart of Cimiez.

The magnificent Belle Époque façades were restored in 2010 by architect Gilles Gauvain.

Today, the Winter Palace of Cimiez houses mainly private apartments and offices. Some areas can also be used for special events or temporary exhibitions.

Beyond its architectural beauty, the Winter Palace stands as a living witness to the rich and eventful history of Nice.
